Abs of steel in Elsternwick with Core Pilates!
Have you tried to Bend and stretch and reach for the stars, lately? Whether you remember the Romper Room song or not, chances are if you tried the childrens dance as a mature adult today, youd be a mess of pinched nerves and torn hammies. The fact is that the nimble bodies of our youth; the bodies that cartwheeled, swung from monkey bars and tumbled over fences, are slowly rusting up Tin Man-style. Boo! So what can we do about it? We chatted to Core Pilates Elsternwick owner and instructor, Lee Azjenman, to find out how Pilates can help you retrieve your bendy bod.
The first thing Lee wants you to know is that unlike exercise programs that tend to emphasise profuse sweating and leaping wildly around the room (were looking at you, Zumba!), Pilates takes a different approach. Lee says, Pilates is unique in that it is very precise and works very efficiently. A big focus is core control and postural control – which makes everything else function better. Which explains why Pilates people look like off-duty ballet dancers. Lee adds, There is breathing and spinal work along with mobility and flexibility work. The combination of these make people feel younger and reduces injuries.
For Lee, helping people with limited mobility regain confidence in their bodies testifies to the power of Pilates. She says, At Core Pilates, I have a client with Multiple Sclerosis who used to walk with a stick who now often doesnt even need it or use it walking around! she says, I get a huge buzz out of seeing my clients working away helping themselves, smiling and getting stronger each session. The fact that clients with chronic pain can become pain-free or manage their pain is another reason why Pilates stands apart from other forms of exercise.
Lee also says that its the community around her business that makes the exercise program more than just another way to get fit. She says, At Core Pilates, I have tried to create something more – I wanted to create a space where people could come if they were injured and help them recover faster. But also stay better and improve their quality of life. Basically to help people become the best versions of themselves. Its an approach that has won legions of toned and terrific fans as well as awards (Core Pilates took out Best Overall Business in Elsternwick 2011, and Best Business in the Service Category). So, why not give it Pilates a try you might just manage touch your toes again after all these years!
