There’s evidence that people were stomping grapes and making wine together 5,000 years ago. And as a species deeply dedicated to vino, humans were probably doing it way before that – they just didn’t paint pictures of it in tombs to let us know about it.
Noisy Ritual carries on the tradition of communal wine-making with their people-powered urban winery on Lygon Street, Brunswick East. What began as the unlikely discovery of a vintage concrete wine fermenter under one of the founder’s homes has matured into a bustling community epicentre for imbibing beautiful drops, meeting like-minded people and picking up new skills.
There are a few ways to get on board with Noisy Ritual. You can drop in with a friend, grab a table and order a lovely glass of vino to sip as you soak up the all-around good vibes of the place. You can also rock up to one of their wine-making events. Every year, Noisy Ritual puts on a five-week festival of winemaking, food and music. During the festival, Noisy Ritual takes their repertoire to the next-next level with free winemaking tours, live music and endless winemaking. They crafted 12 new wine varietals during the 2017 festival and they’ll be ready to drink before long.
And for the ultra-keen vino devotees, Noisy Ritual membership is the way to go. As a member, you’ll get to take part in three grape stomps and three barrel tasting sessions, receive six bottles from the vintage you help create, get $2 off every glass of wine at the bar all year long and enjoy 20% off bottles for the year as well. That’s a lot of quality time and a whole lot of wine and it’s just $390 for the year membership.
From Roman times to modern day, wine has always been a social drink and no one’s melding booze and community bonding like Noisy Ritual.
