You can do much better than butter on toast. When CBD espresso and toast bar, Kings and Knaves, opened its doors in July 2017, Melbournes toast standards were forever raised.
The name of this cosy caf harks to a time when coffee was a newly-discovered delicacy in western society. They say the history of coffee is spilling with tales of kings and knaves as dark as the drink itself.
That all sounds pretty serious and in turn, the Kings and Knaves crew do take their coffee quite seriously. They work with Allpress Espresso, a local coffee roaster thats been in the bean business since 86. No doubt they could tell a tale of their own about their rise to coffee royalty over the decades.
But to balance out the serious espresso, Kings and Knaves brings all kinds of cheer to the snacking side of things. Their toast menu is quirky and creative, featuring generously-topped toast to suit all tastes.
The menu will change regularly, but current favourites include seeded sourdough toast topped with smoked salmon, St. Davids Dairy crme fraiche, horseradish, rocket, capers and Mt. Zero lemon oil; Noisette Bakery spiced fruit loaf with house-made berry compote, St. Davids natural yoghurt, crushed pistachio and Rooftop Honey; and white sourdough with prosciutto, roasted cherry tomatoes, basil, mozzarella and rocket.
Located at 277 William Street, Kings and Knaves serves their fare Monday-Friday from 7am-4pm.
