Let’s face it. It has been a looong winter. Even the most dedicated fitness fanatics have been affected by the cold wind, dark mornings, and natural desire for warm comfort food these last few months. But summer is starting to show—the days are longer, the water is warming, and the sun is beginning to shine. Here are a few ways to get your fitness routine back on track and kick-start your fitness goals for the New Year.

Do a Triathlon

Changing things up between a swim, a bike, and a run keeps things interesting for those who get bored easily and makes it easy to keep your exercise routine diverse. You don’t have to be a die-hard triathlete to participate in these multi-part races either; the Gatorade Triathlon Series offers mix of 5 different sprint and Olympic events from November 2016 – February 2017. Don’t want to train by yourself? The Yarra Triathlon Club offers bike, swim, run groups in Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond all-level athletes who are also training for Triathlons. Plus membership to the club includes access to all the Yarra Council gyms, pools, spas and even the golf course! It’s a great way to stay healthy and meet new people this New Year.

Try an Adventure Race

Don’t be fooled by how grueling they appear—these races are fun. Next year, test your skills on obstacle events like the Spartan Race or a Tough Mudder. Or grab a team and try The Great Adventure Challenge, a multi-sport corporate race that will challenge your brain and body with a mountain biking, trail running, kayaking, coasteering and a few mystery tasks as well. If you don’t have the corporate team connections but still want to push your limits, try a Sprint Series Adventure Race.

Run a Marathon

Running is one of the best ways to explore and Victoria just happens to be home to both quirky neighborhoods and beautiful nature. Signing up for 21km or 42km race is a great way to force yourself to get to know Melbourne in a new way. Oh and its excellent cardio too. The Great Ocean Road Marathon on May 21st or Surf Coast Trail Marathon on June 24th are perfect mid-year events to keep you motivated, even after all your co-workers have given up on their New Year’s resolutions.

Sign Up for a Swim

Start the New Year off with a splash! The Pier to Pub swim in Lorne is a 1.2km swim from the foreshore into the boathouse; it’s just long enough to earn you a beer but just short enough that you won’t feel like you haven’t swam since last summer. If your looking for something a little closer to the city, South Melbourne host the Port to Park 1.1km swim on February 4th.

Run Fun

Marathons not your thing? Need some extra motivation to keep running? Park runs, 5km fun runs, and orienteering are great ways to stay entertained while staying healthy and on track with your fitness goals. The West Melbourne Sunset Series gets you off the beaten path by combining mental and physical exercise. Think running meets scavenger hunt. Participants start running together, using a map to run to various pre-marked control points or landmarks and then return after a designated time or certain number of controls. It’s a great way to shake up your normal routine. If you’re bored with running on a treadmill, definitely give this a try. You can also check out these running calendars for a variety of different events and run groups in your local area. (http://runcalendar.com.au/melbourne,  https://www.runningcalendar.com.au/).
