It’s pretty cool that food can be healthy but also taste amazing. Northcote has become a bit of a hub for healthy eating and we’re here to take you on a tour of the town’s top options for guilt-free grub.

Tahina

223 High St, Northcote 3070 | (03) 9972 1479

The food at Tahina is off-the-hook, in terms of flavour and health. Their plant-based Israeli dishes play with texture and deliver traditional tastes from Tel Aviv. Their pita pockets are a great on-the-go option and we recommend a beautiful Shaksuka platter for a sit-down. Whether you’re staying or going, for the love of god, order a smoothie to go with your snack. The Salted Caramel and Chocolate Wendy’s Frosty are our faves – they taste like milkshakes but they’re made entirely from whole foods.

Loving Hut

377-379 High St, Northcote 3070 | (03) 9077 1335

This café is passionately vegan, so you can expect to get your fill of veggies when you dine here. Their menu draws on Buddhist principles of the balance of yin and yang and the belief that diet influences that balance. But if you don’t care about that, it’s cool – all you need to know is that the food is delicious, veggie-heavy and prepared in a way that preserves the nutritional integrity of the ingredients.

Melbourne Vegan Café at Joe’s Organic Market

64 Victoria Rd, Northcote 3070 | (03) 9077 2746

Tucked in the back of independent organic grocery store Joe’s Organic Market, Melbourne Vegan Café serves coffee, snacks, smoothies, juices and fresh food – all organic, of course. Locals show their support for the café’s core focus of animal rights, human health and the planet by popping in for tucker. It’s open seven days for food and drink with group meditation sessions scattered throughout the month.

Shokuiku

120 High St, Northcote 3070 | (61) 403 569 019

Shokuiku takes clean eating one step further, from healthy to healing. They specialise in raw and living (biodynamic) food made with responsibly-sourced whole food ingredients. The menu is beverage-heavy with a huge selection of herbal teas, medicinal teas, smoothies, hot drinks and elixir shots that will probably make you feel like you’re nailing the whole health thing. Besides the bevvies, Shokuiku does a few quick dishes like nutty buckwheat porridge, banana pancakes and smoothie bowls.
