The weather is warming up! It’s time to take our functional drinking habits outside.

Sometimes drinking inside just won’t do. Whether you want to make the most of the weather or you’re just generally put-off by ceilings, our list of Brunswick’s best beer gardens will give your outdoor drinking desires some direction.

Brunswick Green

Some would say this is Brunswick’s favourite beer garden. ‘The Green’ is a local establishment, loved for its open door policy (no pretentious bouncers shaming you for your choice of footwear), cosy indoor nooks and spectacular beer garden. It’s very popular and gets pretty packed at peak time, but somehow (magically, some say) you always manage to find a seat among the palm fronds, umbrellas and fairy lights.

Penny Black

PB’s beer garden goes from max chill to borderline-mayhem pretty quickly, so time your visit wisely. Weekday, nights, early on a Friday evening or during the day on the weekend are prime time for relaxing hangs out the back. Shortly after the sun goes down, the line stretches down the street and the beer garden goes from easy-breezy to very squeezy.

Alehouse Project

If you take your beer just as seriously as you take your beer gardens, put this place on your list. They keep drinking interesting with an ever-rotating selection of craft beer and cider from Australia and abroad. The range is huge, so if you’re bad at making decisions, better bring your official beer advisor along.

The Retreat

Drinking in a licensed outdoor area isn’t the only thing The Retreat has to offer. They’re also known as one of Brunswick’s most dedicated live music venues, hosting as many as five gigs a week. If you’re missing the show to hang out back, you’ll still get to bop along to a brilliant playlist of tunes.
