We’re all about making the un-cool, cool again. Ever shopped in the Coles clothing section? Yeah, nah, neither have we…

All Brunswick roads lead to Barkly Square. Affectionately known as Sparkly Bear by locals, this shopping centre offers far more than meets the eye. Read on for a few of the awesome little secrets that make Barkly Square the best place in the world (yes, the world).

Engraved Flasks at Condello’s Shoe Repair

Be careful. Once you start getting flasks engraved, it’s hard to stop. They have two flask sizes – a normal-sized one that’ll slip into your back pocket and a bigger one that holds way more whisky than anyone should drink in a night. You jot down your personalised message on a piece of paper, pick your font and leave the team to do their work. Depending how busy they are, it might be ready in an hour; if they’re a bit backed up, they’ll probably tell you to come back the next day. You probably need one for every type of spirit plus a few more to give as gifts.

Weird Clothes Section at Coles

Brunswick residents often scoff at the strange patch of clothes nestled near the bread and spice sections at Coles Barkly Square. And for good reason – they look out of place and they get in the way when you make a mad dash from the cling wrap to the chicken stock. But when you take a moment to look through the racks, you might be surprised at how cute some of the clothes are. Plus, most of them are 100% cotton! The section is half kid’s and half women’s, so our condolences to gentleman shoppers – you’ll have to make a separate trip if you need a new top.

Fresh OJ at Gangemi’s

You know how packed the Barkly Square parking lot gets? By our estimation, about 10% of those people have come to the shopping centre just for a fresh orange juice from Gangemi’s. This fruit and vegetable shop has a spot in the back dedicated to juicing oranges. They do three sizes, so if you’re smart about it, you’ll get a small one to drink immediately and a bigger one to bring home and keep in the fridge and drink over the next 24 hours. This OJ is top notch. If you’re thirsty, it’s invigorating; if you’re hungover, it’s a saviour; if you’re a juice critic, you’re going to have to find a new career because you’ve finally found the best.

Hot Baked Potato at Pure Poultry

Anyone can bake a darn potato, but no one knows how Pure Poultry makes their taters taste like this. This is what we know: The potatoes are peeled, they seem to be twice-cooked (steamed then baked perhaps?), they are salty, they melt in your mouth. If you like to snack and shop, grab one of these to enjoy as you go about your Barkly Square business. You won’t be the only one walking around eating a baked potato out of your hand.
