Jack Watts, Port Adelaide Football Player and Co-Founder of Skwosh – an Australian designed swim trunks label. The etho behind Skwosh is to create a brand that is all about fruit, fun and the sun! Skwosh embodies the spirit of summer fun in its design; from watermelons, pineapples, peaches, flamingos, toucans and more, all in bright colours that evokes good vibes and an eccentric carefree attitude. With designs for men, women and children, this swimwear is guaranteed to brighten your day, regardless of the season. Here’s what Jack had to tell us at Postcoder.
So why Skwosh? What prompted you to start?
We did a lot of research and spoke to a lot of people, and we basically felt there was a gap in the market for this type of swimwear. We set out to make men’s shorts that were really bright and colourful and would look equally good down at the beach as when worn casually.
Who would you say is the heart of Skwosh?
At the heart of Skwosh are three guys who want to bring fun, happiness and good times to anyone and everyone who want to listen! Yes, we run a business and like having a good sales figure. But at the end of the day we want to enjoy ourselves and we really hope our customers do the same!
What would you say has been your magic moment to date?
I can remember so many moments, both big and small, which makes all the setbacks, hard work and tough conversations worth it. I remember the first night we went live with our website and the excitement felt by the whole team or the first time I saw someone I didn’t know walking down the street in a pair of Skwosh shorts. Oh and the first Skwosh lunch on the company credit card. I guess it really is the little things that stick out in my mind as the important milestones.
What is the best piece of business advice you have ever received?
Well I guess it’s a little cliche, but the best piece of advice I have ever received, and would like to give also, is that you have to do what you enjoy and feel passionate about. It just breeds success and makes all the hard work seem easy, which in turn continues to breed more success.
Finally, what is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to start a business based on everything you have learnt
Just do it! So many people have incredible ideas but few have the guts and determination to bring them to life. The world is filled with doubters and if you listen to them you’ll never end up doing anything. Trust your instinct and be sure to follow you passion, regardless of what others say!
And some quick questions to finish off –
What’s one thing that always makes you happy?
I love seeing other people happy and having a good time, especially my friends and family. So that’s a big driving force for me. If I can live my life in a way where people enjoy my company then I’ll be a content old man one day.
