This month, Postcoder were lucky enough to chat with Laura Foley, co-founder of Bali Body. Laura and her husband, David Oosterloo, founded the brand back in 2014 whilst living in Canggu, Bali. Both with a love for the sun and bronzed skin, the couple wanted to create a natural tanning oil that could be used on sensitive skin. It was from this idea that Bali Body was born.

Laura and David started by sourcing a collection of high quality natural oils to begin playing with various formulas. This inevitably lead to the creation of their first product, the famous Tanning and Body Oil. This month, Bali Body is launching a brand new product to its vastly growing collection, The Pineapple Tanning Oil. This luxe multi-purpose, hydrating tanning oil is set to nourish your skin while helping to create a deep summer glow. Enriched with grape seed oil, sweet almond oil and coconut oil to naturally enhance your tan, it is guaranteed to leave you smelling like a tropical summer holiday.

Chatting with Laura, we got a deeper insight into the brains behind the brand. Here’s what she had to say:

What prompted you start Bali Body?

We started Bali Body to provide people with sensitive skin (like me) high quality skincare and sun care, at an affordable cost. I was so tired of using products packed full of harsh chemicals which would constantly irritate my skin. It was this annoyance that inevitably provided the initial reasoning for wanting to create our brand.

What’s a typical day at Bali Body look like?

Busy! I would love to say that everyday consists of photoshoots in tropical locations and product testing on a sun lounge, but unfortunately it actually involves amples of time sitting in front of a computer screen. We like to be super organised and really push our brand to its full potential. So to ensure this dream is made a reality on a daily basis it requires a lot of time and hard work.

Who, or what would you say is the heart of Bali Body?

My husband David and I are definitely the heart of Bali Body. The business is our baby. Other than us, our staff are amazing and we love connecting with our community, so we are able to create great products that our customers absolutely love. Knowing that our customers are recommending us to their friends is really inspiring and keeps pushing us to create new products. Our latest of course being the Pineapple Tanning Oil.

How do you connect with your customers?

We utilise social media to connect with our consumers. We love speaking with our customers via Instagram and Facebook. We see social media to be far more transparent than traditional advertising, which is all communication flow one way. Engagement from our customers is our biggest marketing tool. We LOVE when a customer gets in touch about how our products have improved their skin condition, or just bettered their life in some way. Hitting 1M followers on Instagram recently was an amazing achievement for us!

How do you differentiate yourself from competitors?

By constantly evolving! It is by staying ahead of the curve that we are able to constantly keep Bali Body feeling exclusive and premium. Essentially, that is what separates great original brands from copycat brands that spring up simply to replicate an existing product or idea – there is no future in that!  

What is the best piece of business advice you have received?

A friend once told us to use Australian suppliers as much as possible. Sure, the cheap prices overseas can be tempting, but when you take into account shipping costs and the extra headaches, you can’t beat the quality and care of Australian manufacturing.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to others looking to start a business based on everything you have learnt?

Make sure your idea is solid, and unique in some way. And then go for it – you have to give it 110% or it will never get it off the ground.

Favourite holiday destination? So many to choose! But I love the Maldives – it’s heaven on earth.
