We catch up with the true kings of the humble bagel.
Zev is the kind of guy you’d like to sit down and have a beer with, or perhaps a cup of batched brewed coffee and a bagel? A New Jersey native, Zev worked in Israel as a tour guide for ten years before ending up as a chef in Australia. After a few years of living in Melbourne, working in some of the cities best kitchen’s, Zev found himself missing his hometown bagels. With a lack of good options in Melbourne, Zev saw an opportunity – a large hole in the bagel market, so to speak. Thus, 5 & Dime Bagels was bread. Er… bred.
After boiling and baking his way around the States, Zev finally had a “traditional-ish” bagel to bring to Australia. Back in Melbourne, Zev started selling bagels at local farmer’s markets, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. After slightly refining his recipe to include local ingredients and accommodate for a difference in Australian supplies, 5 & Dime Bagels opened its doors in the Melbourne CBD.
This small but chic cafe offers patrons a variety of freshly baked chewy bagels, and hot bialys. (Bee-ah-lees – the humble bagels lesser known but equally delicious Polish cousin). Bagels are $2.20 each, $4.50 with cream cheese. A batch-brewed coffee/buttered bagel combo will only set you back $6.50 from 7-9am each morning! With those kinds of prices, it’s easy to see why 5 & Dime is a daily morning ritual for some.
The menu doesn’t just extend to the morning rush, however. Lunch options include a variety of sandwiches made with Meatsmith Meats and bagels topped with whatever your heart desires. The Everything Bagel and Lox Bagel are the most popular, but the Peanut Butter and Pickle sandwiches are asked for more often than you’d think. Personally, Zev recommends the Dill Pickle Rye Bread – home-made with pickle juice from pickles fermented in-house. If you’re not in the area, don’t fret, 5 & Dimes fresh bagels and flavoured cream cheeses can be found at various local markets around Melbourne!
