After something more exciting, creative or eco-conscious when it comes to redecorating your home? Want to help support landfill diversion in our city? Well, it might be time for you to visit the Tip Shop at Acacia Ridge!

This Council-funded and charity run initiative is the latest trend for picking up a bargain and finding a one-off, pre-loved piece. One of only two of its kind in Brisbane, our citys Tip Shops are the waste warriors hotspot for weekend shopping.

If you have never visited a Tip Shop before, do not fear. Its basically a big warehouse filled with everything and anything from furniture to unique dcor pieces that were lovingly saved on their way to landfill. All items are inspected before they are placed out and nothing that is broken or not in working order is displayed.

Run by the Endeavour Foundation, these stores not only cater for the budget friendly shopper, they also provide essential support and employment opportunities for those living with disabilities. So while you can leave feeling pleased with your budget-happy, environment friendly shopping spree, its also important to remember that all proceeds are reinvested back into this worthy foundation. So really, its a win-win for everyone and a perfect excuse to shop like we ever really needed one!

One hot tip to remember is about timing your trip. The Acacia Ridge Tip Shop is only open on Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 4pm. Although you may be thinking you can have a lovely late morning then wander on in, that might not be the best option. This is serious business if you are really after the cream of the crop! So get there early. Plan to be there at least 15 minutes prior to opening as there are some amazing things that people tend to throw away and those dont stick around for long. When it comes to the Tip Shops, it really is true what they say: one mans trash really is another mans treasure.

People travel from all over the place to make it to the Acacia Ridge Tip Shop, so why not make a day of it and visit some of the other great op shops in the area? Relove in Oxley is a nearby second-hand shop with a focus on vintage and antiques. The place is full of beautiful one-off pieces, vintage vinyls and collectables. There is also a caf inside which serves delicious food and the most important thing in most of our lives coffee! So you can refuel (trust us, youll need it) and continue your bargain hunt at the same time.

Thinking your trip out to Acacia Ridges second-hand paradise could do with some new threads as well? By shopping for your new clothes at tip shops and op shops, you probably dont even realise the contribution youre making to a greener world

Consider this for a moment: On average, each Australian purchases 27 kilograms of new textiles per year, and about 23 kilograms of that makes its way into landfill! It really is a pretty tragic example of how wasteful our society has become.

While many of us donate our unwanted clothes to op shops, only a small fraction of garments actually find new homes, as more customers prioritising second-hand shopping is needed. This is a shame, considering all the effort put in by charity volunteers who spend hours shifting through garments and placing them out for sale.

You can do the world and your wardrobe a favour by heading to the Tip Shop and op shops located in the Acacia Ridge area. Another hot tip from us is to stop by Loved Labels one the best pre-loved clothing stores in the area. There is also a Vinnies Op Shop, a Lifeline Superstore and a Salvation Army Store close by all of which have a fantastic mix of clothing, homewares, books and furniture.

Not only is donating or buying your homewares and clothes from these outlets a wonderful way to score a bargain, youll be helping fight the war against waste.

Ready to give back? If you would like to help support reuse in Brisbane, remember you can donate any unwanted items you have to the Tip Shops by making a quick visit to one of Brisbanes four resource recovery centres. More information given in the links below.
