There may be no man on earth harder to catch than Brad Nixon, owner of Elementary Coffee on Young Street, Adelaide. Fuelled by caffeine and racing against time to set up a new roastery, whilst managing a caf and scouting a location for a second, Brad has every minute of his day double booked. But thats just how it is when your brilliant beans are blowing minds and winning hearts across Adelaide. And its why Elementary Coffees signature roast is this months Coffee Scout pick!
The demand for our product is growing so fast its hard to keep up! Brad says when he finally finds a free moment to chat, but its one of those good problems that I absolutely dont mind having! Brad has come a long way since the seed was first sewn to start his own caf and roastery. After moving to Melbourne and living and working there for 5 years, Brad learned the ins and outs of the coffee trade in the hope of one day running his own business. He says, Melbourne really honed my skills as a barista and I learnt everything about training, green coffee importing, roasting and the workings of running a successful business.
But Brad knew that if he wanted a future in coffee hed have to say goodbye to Melbourne. The level of competition there was starting to exceed demand and the amount of money needed to be relevant in that cut-throat market really was starting to detract from what I thought a cafe should be about. He says. But with the wisdom of one who understands that good coffee is appreciated pretty much anywhere, Brad chose to return home to Adelaide where he immediately saw his opportunity. I fell in love with the small town vibes that the city had going on and saw a real appreciation for local produce here. Ive never looked back!
The reception of Elementary Coffee in Adelaide has been rapturous, and after only 2 years in the game, Brad can already look back on the business early days with wonder. We were a little pensive about the location on Young Street as the largest building close to us was actually vacant at the time of signing the lease! Thankfully a building was soon filled up with 900 government employees all looking for a good new coffee spot to call home. And find it they did, with customers clamouring for Elementary Coffees house blend, developed specifically with Adelaidians in mind. The darker roast with epic smoothness is in contrast to Elementarys single origin roast program, which Brad says is an homage to his Melbourne days. Its a lighter roast, quite bright and heavily characteristic of the growing country. He says.
